Harvey Pekar, (1976-2008)

In 1988, Harvey Pekar wandered in off the street, saying he would like to write for In These Times. Hedid, but he is better known for American Splendor, 39 comic books published between 1976 and 2008 that define the working-class graphic memoir. Pekar paints an unsentimental portrait of everyday life in his hometown of Cleveland, with the help of illustrators like Robert Crumb and Alison Bechdel.
