Whereto Army Futures Command?

As cities around the country compete to be the home of Amazon's second headquarters, some are jockeying to host the new Army Futures Command.

"There is quite a bit of interest," Army Secretary Mark Esper said at the Heritage Foundation.

Officials have drawn up a list of potential locations. "We're winnowing down that list based on criteria, and at some point in the coming couple months or so we will make an announcement," he said.

In an April 17 letter to lawmakers, Army Undersecretary Ryan McCarthy said the 15 finalists are: Atlanta, Austin, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, New York, Philadelphia, Raleigh, San Diego, San Francisco and Seattle.

The command will be responsible for spearheading the service's top modernization priorities. Like Amazon, the Army wants its new facility to be in an innovation hub. "We need to be located next to where the talent is ... where we can draw on the best people" from academia and industry, Esper said.

National Defense asked Esper if DIUx locations such as Austin, Boston and Silicon Valley are frontrunners.

"I don't want to put my finger on the scale" at this point, he said. …
