Amazon defenders

A group of young people made history in Colombia after the Supreme Court endorsed their effort to sue the government for failing to tackle climate change. The 25 claimants maintained that Amazon deforestation rates in Colombia - which increased by 44 per cent between 2015 and 2016 - threaten 'their rights to a healthy environment, life, health, food and water'. The court's ruling requires the government to 'present an action plan to reduce deforestation in the Amazon' within four months and recognizes the Colombian Amazon as an 'entity subject of rights'.

Palmed off

Iceland has become the first major British retailer to ban palm oil from its ownbrand products. The company's decision will see the controversial vegetable oil - the cultivation of which leads to rampant deforestation and is laying waste to orangutan habitats in Southeast Asia - replaced with less environmentally damaging alternatives. …
