For decades, Sue Coe has used art to bring attention to social justice and the rights of marginalized groups, including nonhuman animals. In the new exhibit Graphic Resistance, MoMA PS1 high ights Coe's critiques of exploitation and violence going back to the Reagan era. In These Times spoke with Coe about the project.

How does this show respond to the Trump administration?

Everyone can do something and, you know, I'm a graphic artist, that's what I want to do. I've always done that. I've tried to get into places that aren't covered, or are made invisible or very hard to get in with a camera, so it justifies bringing a pencil.

To me, Trump is no different-I mean, he's a stark capitalist. He's particularly dangerous not because he's inherently worse, but because capitalism itself-I mean, this is my opinion-is in its death throes. And in its death throes it will be very, very dangerous. …
