Parker Quartet: Daniel Chong and Ying Xue, violins; Jessica Bodner, viola; Kee-Hyun Kim, cello (Nimbus Alliance) The Parker Quartet's new disc of the first and third of Mendelssohn's three Op. 44 quartets is an exciting addition to the recording canon. With their breakneck tempi and enviable unity of stroke, the Parkers are ideal interpreters of Mendelssohn's scherzo movements.

The group brings a special joy and lightness to the D-major quartet. Their exuberant performance of the first movement is an attention-grabbing opener. The Parkers are masters of fast movements: The Presto con brio fi nale also shows off their trademark quicksilver virtuosity. For my taste, however, violinists Chong and Xue used a few too many deliberate slides in the Menuetto and the other slower-tempo movements throughout the disc, often placing them over the same melodic motives to the point where they become predictable. …
