If the string-quartet repertoire is best played by full-time ensembles, the piano-trio repertoire, by contrast, can sound glorious in the hands of top soloists coming together for special occasions. In this new disc of the Brahms piano trios, longtime duet partners Yo-Yo Ma and Emanuel Ax are joined by another superstar soloist, violinist Leonidas Kavakos. And what an addition it is to the long-recorded history of these compositions. In contrast to some of the rather over-vibrated, portamento-heavy interpretations from the past decade or so, the Kavakos-Ma-Ax recording has an "inward" character that seems at once more intellectually satisfying and more heartrending. the tempos of the Allegro and Scherzo movements are surprisingly relaxed, and by contrast, the slow movements are faster than they're often performed. …
