BENJAMIN BRITTEN THREE CELLO SUITES

Quirine Viersen, cello (Globe)The musical lan-guage of Benjamin Britten's three Cello Suites is not necessarily easy for audiences to understand, nor for cellists to learn. In her autobiographical booklet notes to her new recording of the complete suites, Dutch cellist Quirine Viersen admits initially being per-plexed by their style. "Hearing his music for the first time, the music seems so elusive. You're like: Hey? What's happening? What exactly do I hear there?"

Inspired by the example of her compatriot and friend Pieter Wispelwey, however, Viersen persisted in her study of Britten. Since she had recorded the complete Bach Cello Suites (Globe, 2012), learning about Britten's own fascination with Bach became a motivating force.

This new recording approaches Britten's music from a Bachian perspective. …
