The Sphinx Organization has announced the 15 recipients of more than $180,000 in MPower Artist Grants. The organization selects alumni artists from the Sphinx Competition, Sphinx Symphony Orchestra, and other programs in order to help recipients "achieve their career objectives in classical music."

A few of the most notable awards: double bassist and Juilliard School alum Jonathan Colbert recieved a grant of $38,000 to purchase a new instrument; $30,000 went to double bassist Maurice Todd to create the Cincinnati Double Bass Institute, which will focus on teaching students in Cincinnati public schools; and $24,500 was awarded to Royal Academy of Music double-bass professor Chi-chi Nwanoku to produce upcoming performances of the Chineke! Orchestra and Chineke! Junior Orchestra.

The sizes and purposes of the grants varied-from $1,000 to violinist Matthew David Adams to help him attend the Aspen Music Festival to a $16,500 grant to double bassist Aaron Olguin to "embark on a five-venue chambermusic tour with the Bassinova Quartet" across multiple states and Canada. …
