Cities Make Progress on Controversial Scooters

The war between the city of Santa Monica and electric scooter companies Bird and Lime has been brewing since the shared transports first appeared on city streets without much apparent planning. Santa Monica has now ruled that Bird, Lime, Lyft and Uber will be allowed to operate a total of 2,000 scooters and 1,000 e-bikes for an 18-month period, after which time the companies must show that the conveyances are being used safely and frequently. Meanwhile, San Francisco decided that only Scoot and Skip would be allowed to operate there, perhaps penalizing Lime and Bird for not asking nicely first. …
