My Brilliant Friend

In this limited series' first two installments, screened at the Venice Film Festival on Sept. 2 before a November bow on HBO, we meet Elena (Elisa Del Genio) and Lila (Ludovica Nasti), two young girls in a beautifully photographed nostalgic vision of 1950s Naples. The two gradually come to understand the often-violent world around them. Del Genio's baleful, knowing performance serves the same purpose as the narration in Elena Ferrante's source-material novel: introducing the wisdom of adulthood into this tale of vanishing innocence. daniel DADDARIO

Producers: Lorenzo Mieli, Mario Gianani, Domenico Procacci Cast: Elisa Del Genio, Margherita Mazzucco, Elisabetta De Palo, Ludovica Nasti, Gaia Girace
