Julia Irene Kauffman

President's Award

Julia Irene Kauffman * Mission Hills, Kans.

Created in 1988 and presented biennially, the President's Award recognizes outstanding contributions to the art of the organ in the United States. AGO President Michael Bedford presented the award to Julia Irene Kauffman "in gratitude for her generous patronage of the arts and faithful support of the King of Instruments."

Julia Irene Kauffman is chairman and chief executive officer of the Muriel McBrien Kauffman Foundation. The Foundation's mission and vision focus on support of the performing and visual arts in the Greater Kansas City area.

In 1995, Ms. Kauffman was designated chairman of the board of the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts and spearheaded the effort to build the Center in downtown Kansas City. The widely acclaimed Kauffman Center was completed in September 2011. The project brings renewed growth and vitality to the metropolitan performing arts scene with a focus on arts education and wide-ranging cultural enrichment.

One of the visual and auditory highlights of the center is the Julia Irene Kauffman Casavant Organ, Opus 3875, in Helzberg Hall. This custom-built instrument was commissioned to showcase incredible sound, elegant beauty, and perfect harmony complimenting the acoustical and visual design of the concert hall.

Ms. Kauffman's civic and philanthropic activities include the Kansas City Symphony Foundation Board of Directors, the Lyric Opera of Kansas City Board of Directors, and Chairman of the Board of the Kansas City Ballet. She previously served on the Board of Trustees of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and as a trustee of the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music and Dance. Her diverse community and personal interests include serving on the Kansas City Royals Baseball Club Board of Directors since 1997, and as a member of the Executive Board of the Heart of America Council/Boy Scouts of America. Julia also serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the Soldiers', Sailors', Airmen's and Marines' Club in New York City and is a member of the Visiting Committee to the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Edward A. Hansen Leadership Award

Michael Quimby * Warrensburg, Mo.

Created by the AGO National Council in 1999 to honor the memory of the Guild's distinguished past president, Edward A. Hansen, AAGO, the prestigious award is presented biennially to recognize individuals who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in the AGO. The 2018 Edward A. Hansen Leadership Award was given to Michael Quimby "in gratitude for his lifetime of devoted service to the Guild, his generous and faithful support of the Regional Competitions for Young Organists and Rising Stars, and his unwavering commitment to the King of Instruments."

Michael Quimby is president of Quimby Pipe Organs Inc. Established in 1970 and located in Warrensburg, Mo., Quimby Pipe Organs specializes in building, enlarging, rebuilding, and restoring pipe organs. The firm's installations range in scope from small two-manual organs to large four- and five-manual instruments that can be found throughout the United States.

Quimby, who is an organist himself, is keenly aware of the importance of fostering the art of organ playing. …
