When U.S. policymakers consider trade and economic issues, international education isn't typically part of the discussion. But it should be, and here's why:

The United States is in a competition for global talent with other countries. New analysis by NAFSA: Association of International Educators finds that international students studying at U.S. higher education institutions contributed nearly $37 billion to the economy and supported more than 450,000 jobs during the 2016-17 academic year. In fact, for every seven international students enrolled, three U.S. jobs are created or supported as a result of their spending in sectors such as higher education, accommodations, dining, retail goods, transportation, telecommunications, and health insurance. …
