VA, Labor Focus on Jobs at VFW Convention

The Forever GI Bill, veteran unemployment and the VA MISSION Act were among the topics discussed at VFW's 119th National Convention in July in Kansas City, Mo. VA and Department of Labor officials outlined their top priorities in a panel hosted by Ryan Gallucci, director of VFW's National Veterans Service, and Carlos Fuentes, director of VFW's National Legislative Service.

One of the guest speakers, Paul Lawrence, Ph.D., VA's undersecretary for benefits, said his department processed nearly 160,000 claims that came from VFW last year and reminded VFW members that the VA is hiring. Fifty-five percent of VA benefits employees are veterans, he said.

Also addressing the panel was Matt Miller, deputy assistant secretary for policy at the Department of Labor's Veterans' Employment and Training Service. …
