Lawmakers Want Cannabis Research

Members of the House and Senate VA Committees sent VA Secretary Robert Wilkie a letter on Aug. 30 urging VA to conduct medical research into the safety and efficacy of medicinal cannabis.

The letter recommended that VA focus on veteran patients with post-traumatic stress disorder and chronic pain so providers can better understand the potential benefits or dangers of medicinal cannabis.

"Without rigorous, Department-led research ... both VA doctors and veterans will remain in the dark about this potentially beneficial alternate treatment," the letter stated.

"In fact, many veterans state that cannabis is better at reducing and controlling their pain than prescription painkillers and opioids."

The letter also discussed that, as more than half the country has legalized cannabis for medicinal or recreational use, veterans are legally obtaining it for medicinal purposes. …
