In December, President Donald Trump signed the National Defense Authorization Act of 2018. The bill appropriates the Department of Defense a budget of $692.1 billion. In a resolution approved at the 2017 VFW National Convention in New Orleans, VFW urges Congress to provide at least 5 percent of the nation's gross domestic product (GDP) amount total for the readiness, training, modernization, health care and quality of life initiatives for the armed forces. The approved budget is below 5 percent GDP by $236.4 billion. The total GDP reported for 2016 was $18.6 trillion.

VFW also urges Congress to:

* Eliminate sequestration, which started in 2013 and has negatively impacted defense readiness and modernization programs.

* Fund VA and DoD programs and services, as well as adjust outdated budget caps.
