IT'S DIFFICULT FOR ME TO BELIEVE that the issue you are currently reading is, in fact, my nineteenth since taking over as book review editor. As a former review contributor and contributing editor, I take great pride in helping to fulfill World Literature Today's mandate to highlight the best literature from all over the world. Over the past three years, I have worked, in conjunction with the other editors and staff, to make our review section as timely, diverse, and comprehensive as space would allow.

But before I was a contributor or an editor, I was just like you: a reader. It's no exaggeration to say that reading World Literature Today expanded my horizons, altered my perspective on literature, and, ultimately, changed my life. When each new issue finally returns from the printer, I set aside time and read it, cover to cover, just as I did when I received my first gift subscription back in 2003. …
