How small can a poem be? Poet Alex Leslie was inspired to find out by a line from John Thompson's poem "Stilt Jack," where he writes, "I know how small a poem can be".

In the collection The Things I Heard About You, Leslie proves to be an expert whittler of words. The book of erasure poetry is structured as a series of four-part clusters. In each poem, the first section is half a page or more of narrative storytelling, rich in detail and generous with emotion. Each of the three successive sections is composed of words selected from the first; sometimes an image from a previous piece is turned on its head or is so superconcentrated that it is like a small box exploding its seams. …
