The venerable Susan Sontag, who died in 2004, was one of the great American intellectuals of the 20th century. Highly prodigious, she had an inscrutable, razorsharp mind. Mainly known as an essayist, Sontag was also a screenwriter and director, novelist, social activist and playwright.
