Southern right whales, Eubalaena australis, which are found through most of the southern hemisphere, are a common sight at El Doradillo beach near Puerto Madryn, Patagonia, Argentina, where these photos were taken in 2017-a year when a record number visited the area to breed and nurse. Local photographer Agustín Esmoris had been visiting the beach for years, waiting with his camera for hours at a time to capture whale interactions with kelp gulls, Larus dominicanus. Finally, one afternoon in July, he got the shot he had been looking for when a kelp gull landed on the back of a breaching whale. "It was an amazing moment. It happened very fast, and I was finally lucky enough to capture these two in a sequence of shots with great light," Esmoris said. The roughly fifty- to sixty-foot whale was about fifty feet from Esmoris, who stood with his feet and tripod in the water to capture the moment. …
