THE COMPLETE ORGAN SONATAS OF JOSEF RHEINBERGER. Roger Sayer, organ. Harrison & Harrison organ, Temple Church, London. Priory PRCD 1165. Priory.org.uk. Admirers of Rheinberger have a new complete sonata cycle, coming some years after Wolfgang Riibsam recorded all of the organ works for Naxos in a long series of eight separate CDs. (That project included the famous trios, as well as the monologues.) Now organist Roger Sayer has recorded all 20 organ sonatas at the Temple Church in London for the Priory label. The result is a single boxed set of six discs, including a booklet. For a composer whose stature has diminished over the last century, it is a luxury to have two complete sonata cycles to choose from. This review will not compare them; I leave that to individual judgment. I do think that the Sayers cycle is a very fine production, all around.

The Temple Church organ-originally installed in a Scottish castle and inaugurated by Dupré-is by Harrison & Harrison. The original organ dated to 1923; the transmigration to London took place in 1954; and the firm undertook further work in 2013. The organ is on the north (left side) wall of the church. The program notes point proudly to the instrument's unapologetic Romanticism, saying that it "has not been forced to wear ill-fitting clothes" and that "it is still a romantic 'Rolls-Royce' at heart. …
