Aquinas Piano Trio: King's Place

The first in a series of three concerts presented by the Aquinas Piano Trio for the London Chamber Music Society at King's Place had a format which all three programmes will follow: opening with a Haydn trio, then a newly-commissioned piece, ending with Schumann - completing a 'cycle' of his three piano trios. The three commissioned composers will be Anthony Payne, Simon Rowland - Jones and Brian Inglis, an intriguing format that will also expand the modern repertoire for Piano Trio.

There was a real freshness and dynamism to the Haydn. In the opening Allegro Cousin's lightness of touch and assured technical nuance provided a warm welcome to the audience.

The joyous Presto was executed with great vigour and accuracy, with faultless ensemble. I got a sense that they really enjoy playing together.

The newly commissioned work from Brian Inglis provided an entirely different sound world. Divided into two parts, this challenging piece calls on a wide range of influences and demands virtuosic playing. The score also includes quotes from piano trios by both Robert and Clara Schumann.

Interestingly, Inglis has taken inspiration from film and music video editing techniques used in 1980s pop videos. Reference points include; Ultravox's 'Vienna', New Order's 'Bizarre Love Triangle and Pet Shop Boys' 'Kings Cross'. Inglis described how he realises this 'In performance, this works through the use of carefully-graded dynamics, pacing and articulation to suggest effects like fades, cuts and dissolves; compositionally, contrasting textures and types of music are juxtaposed and sometimes superimposed, aiming to give the sense at times of 'tuning in and out' to music which continuously playing, as on the radio'. …
