Oscar Pettiford was born on September 30, 1922, on an Indian reservation in Okmulgee, Oklahoma. His mother was Choctaw and his father was half Cherokee and half African American. He started off playing piano before switching to double bass at the age of fourteen. At eighteen years of age, he joined Charlie Barnett's band and then moved on to Coleman Hawkins, Dizzy Gillespie, Duke Ellington and Woody Herman. He also played on sessions with Miles Davis, Milt Jackson, Thelonious Monk, Sonny Rollins and many others. In the1950s, he started his own group in order to play his own compositions as well as those of others that he wanted to play. He has also said that he didn't like the way that others played the bass, so he developed his own way of playing. …
