CHRISTINA APPLEGATE

"DEAD TO ME" (Netflix)

This is Applegate's third nomination in this category, but first for her new Netflix series. (She has five noms overall, including a win for guest comedy actress for her stint on "Friends.") After taking some time off from TV, Applegate came back stronger than ever as an angry widow whose surprise new friendship with a woman she met in a grief group upended her life in ways good and bad. Some voting members will undoubtedly be enticed to reward her return, but the competition is so stiff this year, she is unfortunately likely to come up short to snatch the statue in September.

JULIA LOUIS-DREYFUS

"VEEP" (HBO)

Louis-Dreyfus set new records with her last Emmy win for her titular role as Selina Meyer on the premium cable political comedy. She won six consecutive Emmys in this category between 2012 and 2017, one for each season of the show, with the streak only ending last year because the show did not air new episodes during the eligibility window. Now she's back, and for its final season to boot. Couple that with LouisDreyfus being a sentimental favorite for having just beat cancer and she is a shoo-in for yet another statue, which would be her ninth overall.

CATHERINE O'HARA

"SCHITT'S CREEK" (Pop TV)

It's hard to believe, but the veteran comedy star has only been nominated for an acting Emmy once before - in 2010, for a more serious project ("Temple Grandin"). Now, she is on the ballot for her somewhat meta role of actress Moira on "Schitt's Creek." In the penultimate season of the Canadian series, O'Hara explored Moira's desperation to hold onto her glamorous gig - as well as the new power she found from stepping behind the scenes. While she is beloved by many an Academy member, this race is so stacked, she will likely have to settle for the honor of just being nominated. …
