OBITUARIES: Roy Henry Carey Jr

Roy Henry Carey Jr., 89 years old, April 28, 2019, at Carlsbad Medical Center, in Carlsbad, N. Mex., after suffering a broken hip in a fall, from which he did not recover. He was born in Carlsbad on Oct. 18,1929, and lived there most of his life. He graduated as valedictorian from Carlsbad High School and attended Washington University in St. Louis before transferring to Trinity University in San Antonio, where he received degrees in music and humanities, with a major in organ as a student of Donald Willing. Following graduation he reported to Officer Candidate School in Newport, R.I., in July 1953, and was on active duty with the U.S. Navy until his honorable discharge in 1956. During active duty he was stationed in Morocco and Nantucket as an information officer. Carey entered the Stanford Graduate School of Business in 1958; his pursuit of an MBA degree was cut short by the death of his father, owner of the Carlsbad Oil Co. Carey returned to Carlsbad that year to become manager of the family business. During his brief time as a Stanford student, he met his wife, Barbara. They married in 1962 after she completed her degree work. Their three children were born and reared in Carlsbad.

During his years as both a Gulf and Chevron jobber, Carey was active in the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce. He was very proud of his years chairing the chamber's education committee and of its many years sponsoring a scholars' dinner honoring the top seniors in the high school graduating class. He was a member of the New Mexico Petroleum Marketers of America for his entire tenure in business, serving as its president for two years. …
