Police Briefing; Man Swings Sword in Assault on Couple

A 25-year-old man was arrested at 1 a.m. Tuesday in the 8300 block of Highfield Avenue and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and battery.

Witnesses said the suspect was with a 24-year-old woman and a 25-year-old man, removed a sword from a wall display and threatened to "chop off the head" of the male. The male victim received a cut on the hand and the woman received scrapes and bruises from a brief struggle with the suspect, according to a police report.

-- Five employees of the Sports Authority, 9292 Arlington Expressway, were arrested at 4:20 p.m. Tuesday at the store and charged with conspiring to ring up merchandise below retail price, resulting in store losses of about $11,000, according to a police report.

Police said store security reported after several months of observing and investigating illegal transactions, in which the employees would ring up merchandise for acquaintances for much less than the actual price. …
