The WNBA postponed its draft yesterday, opening a week that could determine the league's future.

The draft was scheduled for tomorrow, but it became the second event called off because collective bargaining talks are stalled. A predraft tryout camp was canceled last week.

The NBA Board of Governors threatened to cancel the league's seventh season if the WNBA and its players' association do not agree to a contract by Friday.


RODDICK UPSET IN MONTE CARLO -- Andy Roddick was defeated in the first round of the Monte Carlo Masters, losing to Spanish qualifier Albert Portas 7-6 (5), 6-3 in Monaco.

Top-seeded and defending champion Juan Carlos Ferrero had an easy time, winning 6-4, 6-1 against Wayne Arthurs. Ferrero is in good position to win this $2.45 million clay-court tournament following the late withdrawals of Lleyton Hewitt and Andre Agassi and the loss by Roddick.

Among the other matches, Gustavo Kuerten stopped Mardy Fish 3-6, 6-1, 6-0; Alex Corretja lost to Feliciano Lopez 7-6 (4), 6-3; and Arnaud Clement won 6-4, 6-3 against 12th-seeded Fernando Gonzalez.

Tim Henman, who withdrew from the event, will have a scan today on a shoulder injury that may threaten his 10th consecutive appearance at Wimbledon.

AROUND THE COURTS -- ESPN reached a four-year agreement to televise Wimbledon from 2003-06. ESPN and ESPN2 will broadcast nearly 120 hours of programming from the All England Club starting June 23. NBC will show the finals, in addition to other coverage. . . . Hewitt is threatening to sue the ATP Tour over his fine for failing to grant an interview to ESPN in Cincinnati last August. News Ltd. newspapers in Australia reported today that unless the dispute between Hewitt and the ATP Tour was resolved, the Wimbledon champion would take action in the South Australia Supreme Court and seek $1.5 million in damages for defamation and legal costs. Hewitt was fined $106,000 by the ATP Tour for allegedly failing to fulfill his commitments in an interview on Aug. …
