Supervisor of Elections John Stafford cruised to a second term yesterday, saying his win showed Jacksonville voters had forgiven past election slip-ups, including the 2000 fiasco.

"We've worked awfully hard to get voter confidence back," Stafford said.

Stafford, a Republican, beat Democrats Kathy Finn and Terry Wood with enough votes to avoid a runoff. That means he will oversee the May 13 election instead of waiting on the sidelines like he did yesterday.

"I can't wait to get out to see my staff," he said. "Those are my people."

Stafford, 57, had an eventful first term that included the 2000 election fiasco, a botched September primary and a smooth November election. Duval County was among four Florida counties that underwent federal scrutiny in November from U. …
