ST. AUGUSTINE BEACH -- The nationwide search for the next St. Augustine Beach police chief has been narrowed to five candidates.

The City Commission will interview the finalists next week and likely pick one after the last day of interviews on Tuesday.

The finalists are Capt. James Harn with the Cooper City Police Department, near Fort Lauderdale; Richard Hedges, support services division chief with the Ormond Beach Police Department, near Daytona Beach; Capt. Clyde Hedrick III with the Palmetto Police Department, near Bradenton; Roland LaCroix Jr., a commander with the Orange County Sheriff's Office in Orlando; and Phil Williams, chief of police of the Lake Placid Police Department in South Florida.

About 100 people applied for the position but about half were eliminated because they didn't have the proper certifications required to be a law enforcement officer in Florida, City Manager Max Royle said. …
