PAULA RADCLIFFE will run at Crystal Palace this summer and is set to be rewarded with the biggest single pay-day any British athlete has scooped for a domestic track race.

Standard Sport can reveal that the queen of British athletics will compete at the Norwich Union Grand Prix on Friday 8 August in her first domestic track race since winning the Commonwealth Games 5,000 metres title in Manchester last summer. Her night's work could net her in the region of $125,000 (pound sterling80,000) in appearance and prize money.

Though the distance she will run has not yet been revealed, she seems likely to attack the 5,000m world record. If she succeeds, she will become the first British-born runner since David Bedford 30 years ago to set an individual world mark at the famous south London venue.

British athletics these days shies away from paying appearance money - like the $90,000 (pound sterling57,000) once offered to Zola Budd for her 1985 Crystal Palace rematch with Mary Slaney - preferring instead to only reward the top competitors with lucrative prize money. …
