Blaydon can thank their kicker Lee Hogarth for ensuring they finished their National Division Three North season on a high with a last-ditch 27-26 victory at Scunthorpe, (writes Duncan Madsen).

It was just as well that the Tynesiders had secured safety from relegation the week before at Tynedale as they trailed 19-5 to the bottom club at half-time.

Blaydon went behind in the first minute when Nick Gandy's clearance kick was charged down and Ben Sherwood ran in to score an unconverted try.

Flanker Ricky Bagier levelled the scores before two defensive lapses allowed Micky Coult to score a brace of tries for the home side, both of which were converted by Gareth Penn.

A Gavin Stainsby try reduced the margin before Scunthorpe's Darren Schraft scored and the conversion made it a 15-point deficit with 10 minutes remaining.

However, not for the first time this season, Aussie pair Nathan Ridd and Tom McLaren - who finished up as the league's leading forward try-scorer with 14 - got Blaydon back on track with tries which Hogarth converted and the Blaydon kicker kept his nerve with the match-winning penalty in the eighth minute of injury time. …
