Winning Skipper Hails Durham's Young Guns

Article excerpt

Byline: Philip Tallentire

Durham skipper Jon Lewis today hailed quick-scoring young guns Gary Pratt and Nicky Peng after their match-winning knock at Somerset.

The homegrown pair put on 164 in just 23 overs to help Durham towards a Duckworth/Lewis revised victory target of 215 in yesterday's National League Division Two clash.

Somerset were put in at Taunton and made 233-9, with South African paceman Dewald Pretorius showing no signs of jet-lag to take four for 31.

Peng, 20, and Pratt, 21, came together with Durham struggling at 25-2.

Pratt's unbeaten 101 equalled the fastest century by a Durham player in the competition by reaching three figures off just 79 balls with 14 fours, while Peng made 92.

Lewis said: "It was an outstanding partnership and they did it without going for big shots.

"Gary's timing was excellent and Nicky deserves credit also."

* YORKSHIRE launched their National League campaign in style with an emphatic six-wicket win against Warwickshire at Edgbaston.

Darren Gough struck with two late wickets in three balls to restrict the home side to a rain-interrupted 158-9, Ashley Giles hitting an unbeaten 61.

And after a Duckworth-Lewis adjustment, Yorkshire were only required to equal that total to stroll home with seven overs to spare.
