Play-Off Row's a Real Chore for Gateshead

Gateshead, clinging to their Premier Division lives, looked set today to avoid an angry confrontation with the UniBond League.

After finishing third bottom in a woeful season, the Tynesiders expected to host tomorrow night's relegation play-off against Chorley at Filtrona Park, the home of South Shields.

But the League insist the Albany Northern League club's ground is not suitable.

They say allowing Gateshead to stage three league games and the first leg of the League Cup final there was only a concession.

League chief executive Duncan Bailey claims his management committee gave Gateshead the go- ahead only for three stipulated league matches while work is done on the running track at Gateshead Stadium.

But Tynesiders' chairman Mike Coulson has lodged an appeal with the FA.

Gateshead, however, are set to defuse the situation by travelling to Chorley tomorrow night, knowing failure to fulfil a fixture would lead to drastic consequences. …
