Top Green Campaigner Says Plan Is Just 'Insane'

Plans for an animal incinerator on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors are "insane", claims a green campaigner.

Until two weeks ago Charles Secrett was the UK executive director of pressure group Friends of the Earth, stepping down after ten years at the helm.

This week he paid a visit to Teesside to see the work of Friends of the Earth's Teesside project, based in Grangetown.

He also paid a flying visit to Charltons, where some residents are furious about plans by slaughterer J Noddings to build an animal incinerator on the edge of the village.

They fear it would fill the village with fumes and be an eyesore.

North Yorkshire Moors National Parks Authority has already granted planning permission for the burner.

It has to be granted an operational licence by Redcar and Cleveland Council.

"The proposal for an expanded incinerator is insane," said Mr Secrett. "It makes no sense environmentally, or to the community, and will be a significant barrier to the sort of economic regeneration an area with such rich countryside could hope for. …
