Easter is here, with spring firmly in the air. So now is definitely the time to dust off your barrow and spade and go forth into the garden.

Wildlife organisation CONE wants everyone to do just that and is launching Go Wild in The Garden Week from April 19-27.

It doesn't matter if you're a first-timer, or an old gardening veteran, everyone can learn to enjoy their garden and, in the process, make it more user-friendly for wildlife.

In April we see our local hedgerows and woods bursting into life, with a riot of spring flowers and green buds. A cacophony of birdsong can be heard in both the countryside and the garden.

However, it's not just the birds that are making nests, so are the bees. Bees need your help: many of their nesting sites and their wildflower food supplies have been destroyed - as a result, about a quarter of our bees are endangered species.

The use of herbicides has reduced the nectar and pollen supply, while pesticides have affected the bee population directly. …
