Carlyle Conquers US in Hitler Role

Actor Robert Carlyle gives the "performance of his life" as Adolf Hitler in an acclaimed new film about the dictator, American critics said yesterday.

The Full Monty star appears alongside Peter O'Toole and Matthew Modine in the TV drama about the Nazi leader's rise to power.

The Orlando Sentinel said Carlyle was "first rate" while the New York Post said it was his best ever performance.

"He plays Hitler with a blazing intensity - a charismatic maniac in both his private and public lives," said Post reviewer Adam Buckman.

Dr Michael Berenbaum, an expert in Holocaust history at the University of Jerusalem in Los Angeles, said Carlyle portrays Hitler with "enormous power".

Glasgow-born Carlyle, 42, said the role had shown him the full horror of the Nazi leader. He told Entertainment Tonight: "I thought I knew him. Everybody does. But I didn't. Fortunately, there was mountains of material available on him. …
