Michael openshaw's performance in the National 12-Stage Road Relay Championships was a bitter-sweet affair for the former Chester-le-Street runner.

Running the first stage for his adopted club, Birchfield, Openshaw's second-fastest time of the day guaranteed the Midlanders finished in bronze medal position, pushing the North East's leading challengers, Morpeth, out of the reckoning into fourth place after nearly five hours of competition.

"I didn't know the result until late on Saturday, as I set off for home immediately after my leg," said 31-year-old Openshaw.

"I feel sorry for Morpeth that they missed out. I probably know more of the lads in their team than I do in Birchfield's and some of them are good friends of mine."

Openshaw, still one of the nation's leading distance runners despite taking things at a more leisurely pace, is enjoying his running more than ever before and doesn't miss the buzz of international competition. …
