Hetton Lyons were within a few runs of victory when rain washed out their opening-day fixture against Whitburn.

But they beat the weather and arch- rivals Eppleton at the weekend, much to the delight of secretary Michael Young.

There has always been strong rivalry between the two neighbouring clubs which has intensified following the Lyons' entry into the league a few seasons ago.

Young said: "The two sides like to get one over on each other.

"So we were over the moon to beat them on Saturday, although if we had needed perhaps another over the game would have had to be abandoned."

New South African professional Gerry Strydom again impressed and Young claims his bowling is a bonus.

He said: "When we signed him we did so anticipating him to be a front-line batsman and he has not let us down.

"But we did not realise what a useful bowler he was.

"He did very well coming on as first- change at Eppleton, picking up three wickets and giving very little away so all in all he has made a very good start with us. …
