A bigamist due to face child sex charges was found dead at his Tyneside home after he missed the first day of his trial.

Police found the body of Robert Hutchings, 55, at his flat in Newcastle on Tuesday after he failed to appear at Teesside Crown Court.

The father of six was given a 15-month suspended sentence two years ago after he was found guilty of two charges of bigamy.

The former Irish Guardsman was convicted of twice marrying in Newcastle, although he never divorced his first wife Violet Mason, whom he left in Belfast in 1978.

At the bigamy trial Judge Tony Briggs said Hutchings, who had six children and several grandchildren, was incapable of telling the truth.

Hutchings had claimed at the trial at Teesside Crown Court that he had been forced to leave Belfast because of death threats from the IRA.

He had made outrageous claims to Samantha Bone, an 18-year-old he married in 1995, who was staying in a youth hostel he managed in Newcastle. …
