Our readers love a bargain and that is what SHIRLEY FOSTER'S job is all about.

It could well be a Gazette or Herald & Post special offer or an exciting competition to win a holiday abroad; running our very own bingo club with pounds 100 cash to be won every week; it might be a major promotion to send a school class to Disneyland, an invitation to a fashion show or a visit to the Gazette Roadshow at a local event.

Shirley, a 34-year-old mother-of-three, is the Gazette Media Company's promotions manager and she says her job is to create exciting competitions and offers to add lots of value for our hundreds of thousands of readers.

"Our Bid To Win competition, for example, invited readers to collect 'Gazette miles' to have a chance of winning in a secret auction.

The prizes were five family holidays abroad and a prize money of pounds 5,000 at the end of it."

Shirley found that whole groups of people caught the collecting bug, from youngsters to old folk.

Work groups, school pupils, groups of neighbours were all collecting coupons in the paper to take part in the promotion.

Another very successful promotion earlier this year was a two-week giveaway where readers could get something absolutely free every day.

It might have been a carton of milk or a loaf of bread, a pizza or packet of wedges.

Shirley says: "We like to say that the Gazette is 'the paper that pays for itself.' And it's true. If readers took up every offer throughout the year they would finish up with about pounds 750 worth of goodies at the end of the year."

Now that is a bargain.

ANDY WILLIAMS runs the Gazette Media Centre - it used to be known as the community classroom which has seen thousands of 'students' young and old pass through in recent years.

He worked in education for over a decade before joining GMC this year. He says his aim is to extend the variety and level of provision taught at the centre.

"The centre is here to educate and inform all kinds of different people. The equipment is fantastic and work environment is superb."

The facility provides state-of-the-art access to newspaper publishing tools for schools, community groups and residents' associations, to give them the chance to produce their very own newspapers, newsletters and news sheets, which can be printed on the Gazette press. …
