Southside Store Clerk Fatally Shot

A store clerk was fatally shot early yesterday morning at a Southside gas station, and police are trying to determine why he opened the door to a bulletproof booth that protected him.

Police received a call about 4 a.m. that a man was dead behind the cash register at the Amoco gas station on Beach Boulevard and Art Museum Drive. Homicide Sgt. Shannon Douberly said the victim was shot, but he would not give further details.

The man was identified as 22-year-old Moussa Set. Store owner Mia Wares said the clerk was married and had been working at the store for six months.

Wares, who has owned the store since 1997, said a bulletproof booth has protected every employee that worked behind it until yesterday. He said he trains all his clerks never to unlock the booth door when customers are inside the store.

"We always keep it closed for safety reasons, for security," he said.

Wares said the store's security camera was broken, but he planned to have it fixed soon.

"I feel really bad," he said. "And I feel bad for him and his family."

Douberly said it appears robbery was a motive for the shooting. At night, the clerk usually has about $100 to $200 in the register, Wares said.

Douberly said no witnesses were at the scene when police arrived, though two people had called 911. He said investigators want to speak with anyone who may have visited the store early yesterday morning.

Anyone with information should call the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office homicide unit at (904) 630-2172.
