Brooking Warns of Hammer Blows If Side Goes Down

Trevor Brooking has again confirmed players will be sold this summer if West Ham are relegated on Sunday.

West Ham must get a better result at Birmingham than Bolton do at home to Middlesbrough if they are to remain in the Barclaycard Premiership.

But if results go against them a summer sale will ensue.

The main Hammers targets will be skipper Joe Cole, Michael Carrick, Jermain Defoe and David James, while several others will be released because their contracts are up.

But Brooking hopes the nucleus of his squad can be kept at Upton Park. He said: "Whatever happens there will need to be players who will go.

"But we want to try and keep as good a nucleus as we can to give us the best chance of getting back up in a season, if the worst was to happen, like Leicester have done this year.

"The fact is on issues like this - and we could all give a list of the players we would like to keep - the harsh fact is we have got a squad where we have players for whom we would get offers. …
