FEW art forms demand as much from the young as classical ballet. At an age when most teenagers suffer from alienation, fledgling ballet dancers need technical assuredness and artistic discipline. They must be small yet capable of big movement, innocent yet able to convey adult emotions, and they must have soft, pliant limbs as well as muscles of steel.

These physical and artistic demands deter many, but if the Young British Dancer of the Year Award is anything to go by, they are inspiration to a talented minority of British teenagers.

Devised by Royal Ballet School director Gailene Stock and now in its fourth year, the competition final took place on Saturda night. It was a starry occasion, with a prestigious panel of judges and an audience stuffed with dance-world luminaries.

Most of the 16 contestants took all this in their stride, performing their classical variations with youthful flair. …
