Researching and writing today's issue of the week on the pros and cons of home working brought back some not so happy memories for me.

Many moons ago I was charged with helping set up a new district office.

There were delays in signing the lease for the town centre premises.

But the editor was keen for me to get onto the patch to tell people about the imminent opening of the new base.

So for three weeks I worked from home - and I hated it.

At the time I lived in a one-bedroomed flat and while it was quite spacious it was not designed for home working.

There were quite a few days which were predominantly spent hammering the phone informing people about the paper's plans.

I then found it impossible to try to relax in a room I had spent all day in if my shift was followed by an evening when I was not going out anywhere. …
