Filtronic Reaffirms Jobs Vow despite Sales Drop

Electronics manufacturer Filtronic yesterday insisted it was still planning to double its workforce in the North-East, despite warning of a 15pc drop in sales.

The company, which employs 262 people at the former Fujitsu factory in Newton Aycliffe, County Durham, said sales in its core wireless infrastructure business were expected to fall by 15pc in the second half of its financial year, due to the continued slowdown in the global electronics market.

The announcement saw shares in Filtronic, which designs and makes components for devices including mobile phones, fall by more than 16pc on the stock market.

But the West Yorkshire-based company's executive chairman, Professor J David Rhodes, said Filtronic was still on track to employ 500 people at Newton Aycliffe by the end of next year.

He said: "The wireless infrastructure business has nothing to do with Newton Aycliffe, which makes semiconductors and is developing a new range of products, so the fall in sales will not affect the plant. …
