Prime beef production in the UK and other EU countries is likely to fall significantly under current EU Commission policy proposals, says a forecast.

According to the latest analysis from Meat and Livestock Commission economists, in the European Union overall beef production is forecast to decline by 9pc by 2009 - significantly more than the 3pc in the latest EU Impact Study.

This would result in EU imports doubling over the same period.

In the UK overall beef production (prime and manufacturing beef) is likely to be maintained over the next five years solely due to the probability of over 30-month beef returning to the market from 2004.

Prime beef supplies in the UK are forecast to decline by 20pc and prime beef imports to increase by 45pc. These changes would have important implications for rural industry and employment.
