Sharing his expertise with a young entrepreneur has earned Bob Tester a Community Champion award nomination.

The 75-year-old has been in the hairdressing business for 61 years, as was his dad before him.

So when newcomer Sarah Martin wanted to open her own salon, Bob was more than qualified to lend a hand.

Not only did the expert coiffeur offer her some words of wisdom - he also provided a venue for her new business.

The floor space was right next door to his own hairdressing shop but he wasn't worried about competition.

"The ladies' shop next to mine had been empty for a while," he said.

"My daughter used to run it but she is married and has a family so decided she didn't want to do it any more.

"Sarah came along and asked if I could rent it to her so I said OK."

Sarah, who had been working for other people for four years, was keen to get started in her new base at Palladium Shops, Grove Hill, Middlesbrough.

She moved in straight away naming the new salon Fresh Hairs.

But Bob's kindness didn't end there for he also put the word round with his own customers that the new ladies' hairdressers was about to open.

"I do gents and she does ladies," said Bob.

Sarah was delighted, and to show her appreciation the 20-year-old nominated Bob for the Gazette's Champion Neighbour award. …
