A brief look at other local sport

Cycling

Stockton's world points race champion Chris Newton finished fourth in the opening stage of the eight-day FBD Milk Ras in Ireland.

Chris was placed at the front of the main field as home nation rider Tommy Evans won the 135km leg from Dublin to Roscrea.

Golf

Middlesbrough golfer Jonathan Lupton won the English Open Men's Amateur Championship's Brabazon Trophy.

England international Lupton, 24, clinched the prestigious amateur crown at Hunstanton Golf Club in Norfolk.

A first round 75 left him off the pace but a second round 68 followed by a 70 got him back in contention and a final round 74 gave Lupton a 287 total and a two-shot winning margin.

Middlesbrough teenager Michael Skelton finished tied for ninth spot after rounds of 73, 75, 72, 75.

Athletics

The second fixture of the North Yorkshire and South Durham Track and Field League will be held at Shildon's Stadium 2000 at the Sunningdale Leisure Centre tomorrow evening.

The programme begins at 6.30pm with 100m races for all age groups followed by 300m, 400m and 600m for all appropriate age groups.

The track programme concludes with the 3000m for U-17 and senior ladies and men and U-15 boys.

The field eventers will be catered for with the long jump for all female age groups, high jump for all males and triple jump for U-15, U-17 and senior men.

There will also be the shot for everyone and this will be the evening's championship event with winners' medals awarded in each age group.

The newly revived team competition saw Billingham Marsh House Harriers as the surprise winners of the male age groups and Middlesbrough AC (Mandale) winners of the female age groups, and further keen team competition is expected tomorrow.
