In Touch with My Feminine Golfing Side

Even if you're not a golf fan, you're going to hear a lot about the sport this week and Tiger Woods isn't even playing.

Annika Sorenstam will tee it up with the men Thursday in the Bank of America Colonial, a PGA Tour tournament in Fort Worth, Texas. All the sportswriters, columnists and commentators are beside themselves. Some men on the tour are making idiots of themselves by saying Sorenstam should not have been invited.

This is, of course, a huge publicity grab by the tournament organizers. They won't laugh all the way to the bank because they are the bank.

All this lets Canadian Tour player Brian Kontak fade into near obscurity, and that's unfortunate. A member of the Canadian golf tour, he wanted to play in this year's U.S. Women's Open.

Men hit the ball a lot farther than women, and you think that would give Kontak an unfair advantage. But we here at the Terry Dickson Center for Research That Gets Us Out of the Office and Allows Us to Wear Shorts decided to see whether that's true. So I went to Glynco Golf Club one morning and played nine from the women's tees.

I did so despite some warnings.

"It's not any easier,'' Dick Pipe said.

"We used to play a little tournament from the women's tees," Boomer Hendrix said. "I never got any good at it.''

Keep in mind they call him Boomer because of the way he hits a golf ball.

Well, I've hit from the women's tees before, although it was my second or third shot.

I walked up to the tee where a covey of golfers were ready for the husband-and-wife team of Bob and Pat Bevins to lead them off.

"I'm playing with Pat,'' I said, "and I'm hitting from the women's tees.''

I will not say here what she called me.

So I busted this drive down the middle and Lavon Crosby, Vernon Evans, Tommy Faulkner and Blanton Lovin applauded and cheered from back on the men's tee. …
