Durham Hit by Bowler's Call-Up

Durham will include Australian Test star Martin Love in their line-up for the first time this season against Derbyshire at the Riverside today.

But, as one overseas player returns from international duty for Martyn Moxon's side, another is about to depart as paceman Dewald Pretorius has been called up by South Africa for this summer's tour of England.

Love has been away with Australia for the recent Test series against the West Indies and was forced to miss the start of the new season.

But the Queenslander, who has been Durham's leading batsman for the last two summers despite missing a huge chunk of the last campaign with a hand injury, arrived in the North-East on Sunday night and looks set to make an immediate return to his second home at Chester-le-Street.

Although Love was ably deputised by Indian bowler Javagal Srinath for the first six weeks of the season, Durham have certainly missed his quality at number three in the batting order. Captain Jonathan Lewis said: "Of course you are going to miss someone of Martin's ability. He is a world-class talent and we've been without his experience at the top of the order.

"It was nice to have him available again as we lost him for most of last season as well and that had a major impact on our season.

"We lost both him and Paul Collingwood, who are our two front-line batsmen, and although we are still without Paul, Martin's arrival will hopefully give everyone a lift and I'm sure he will be itching to get back into the swing of things."

Coach Moxon added: "We are still having problems finding consistency with the bat, but the arrival of Martin Love is a major boost. He is an experienced player who will be able to guide the younger players around him.

"We were absolutely delighted to be able to bring him back for a third year. …
