I HAVE to admit I'm a bit in love with Kylie Minogue. Not real love for the real Kylie, obviously, but I am fascinated by her journey from B-list soap popsie to multimillion, record-selling global celebrity. I'm also baffled by my reaction. Why am I so besotted?

Rafael Bonachela is besotted, too, although unlike the many millions who swoon from the safe distance of a tabloid headline, the Rambert dancer and fledgling choreographer is up close to his love interest. Bonachela choreographed routines for Kylie's Fever tour, and now comes his new ballet that uses her voice and image to examine the mass love we heap on modern-day icons. The result is 21 (named after Benjamin Wallfisch's 21-minute eponymous score with Kylie's voice), a haphazard piece of heroine worship that says nothing about our need for idols and our parallel need to knock them down.

Problems include the tricksy staging with stage-high images of a pouty Ms Minogue projected onto a front scrim. …
